Ghanaian President Breaks Ground for Twyford’s First Float Glass Factory

On February 24, 2026, President John Dramani Mahama of the Republic of Ghana visited Twyford Ghana to officiate the groundbreaking ceremony of the country's first float glass factory. He was accompanied by the Minister of Trade and Industry, Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare; the Western Region Governor, Joseph Nelson; and the Minister of Fisheries and Shama District Councillor, Emelia Arthur. Together with Mr. Yanchang SHEN, Chairman of Twyford International, and Mr. Lorry LI, General Manager of Twyford Ghana, the President broke ground on the landmark project, marking a historic moment for Ghana's manufacturing sector.

With a total investment of nearly USD 100 million, the new facility is designed to produce 600 tons of float glass per day, aiming to bridge the gap in Ghana's local glass production. The project is scheduled for completion next year and is expected to generate over 1,000 direct jobs upon full operation.

In his keynote address, President Mahama hailed the project as a crucial milestone in Ghana's economic transition from import substitution to an export-oriented economy. Highlighting the country's heavy reliance on imports, he noted, “In 2024 alone, Ghana imported over 65,000 tons of glass products, worth nearly USD 25 million, to meet the needs of our construction, automotive, and manufacturing industries.” He expressed strong confidence that the new plant would reverse this trend, stating, “With the full operation of this new project, Ghana will become a major glass exporter in the region.”

Chairman Yanchang SHEN recalled his dialogue with the President last October, framing the glass plant as a tangible fulfillment of the company's commitment to the Presidential Investment Forum. “Thanks to Ghana’s continuously improving investment environment and clear policy guidance, we have always regarded Ghana as one of the most promising and stable investment destinations in Africa,” Mr. SHEN said. “We are firmly committed to expanding our footprint here.”

 General Manager Lorry LI expressed gratitude for the consistent support from the Ghanaian government and society. “This is another important milestone for the company, but it is just the beginning,” Mr. LI stated. “We look forward to growing together with Ghana and contributing further to the future of the nation's manufacturing industry.”

Following the ceremony, the President and his delegation toured Twyford Ghana’s facilities, including the K6 ceramics and sanitary ware workshops. He gained detailed insights into the company's production capabilities and global brand influence, highly affirming its contributions to local manufacturing and export earnings. At the company’s heritage wall, the President was deeply moved to learn about Twyford’s development history, future roadmap, and its extensive corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives, which have earned nearly 100 letters of appreciation over the years.

 Reinforcing its commitment to the community, Twyford Ghana also announced a significant donation on the same day. In the presence of the President, the company donated building materials worth approximately 500,000 Cedis to 20 schools, health centers, and municipal units in the Western Region.

The event not only underscored Twyford’s continued investment in Ghana’s manufacturing sector but also highlighted the company's pivotal role in the nation's economic development. Summarizing the impact of the project, President Mahama remarked, “As I stand here, I see reduced imports, increased exports, a stronger cedi, jobs for our youth, and Ghana emerging as a manufacturing leader in West Africa. This is not a dream, it is happening.”

Currently, Twyford Ghana’s portfolio spans tiles, sanitary ware, and glass, with products exported to over 20 countries, including Côte d'Ivoire, Burkina Faso, Guinea, Togo, Benin, the United States, Italy, and Spain. Looking ahead, Twyford Ghana will actively align with the government's "24-hour economy" policy, continuously upgrading its technology to elevate the local building materials industry and further enhance the "Made in Ghana" brand on the global stage.
